Choco-Peanut Butter Bars

If you like giant cookies and you don’t mind them covered with melted chocolate and chopped peanuts, then stop fighting yourself and realize your destiny by making this recipe already.  I don’t have a childhood memory about these bars, because if I did, I’m sure it would be my most favorite memory ever.  Something like:  It was a day that blah, blah, blah, and then my brother blah, blah, blah, and my mom said, OH Blah! Blah! Blah! and then the clouds parted and there were peanut butter chocolate bars as far as the eye could see and all was good and right with the world.  The End.

Enough dilly-dallying! Let’s get started already.

Grease your casserole dish with butter. This ensures that your bars will pop right out when done.

In your mixing bowl place:  egg, sugars, shortening, and Image 3peanut butter.  I used crunchy peanut butter, because that’s what I had on hand.  Use whatcha got!  Creamy or crunchy, both will work in this recipe. And I used a natural peanut butter…..just nuts and salt.  This worked out great, since there was already so much sugar in the recipe.  I’m sure that something like Jif would work, but expect it to go into the sweet stratosphere.

Image 2Once mixed, add water, flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.  Mix some more. Stop the mixer, and use a wooden spoon or spatula to mix in half of the chocolate chips.  Spread evenly into greased casserole dish and place in 375 degree oven for about 20 minutes, until golden brown.

Once baked, take out of oven and immediately sprinkle the other half of the chocolate chips on top of the baked peanut butter mixture.  Place a baking sheet on top to keep the heat in…..melting that delicious cImage 1hocolate on top.

And then the magic happens.

When all melty, spread the chocolate out evenly all over the top of the peanut butter cookie.  Sprinkle with chopped salted peanuts.  AND THAT IS IT.  Let it cool and cut up and gobble down.

Unfortunately for you, now you know that you are only a few minutes away from chocolate-peanut butter heaven.  I suppose there are worse things.

Choco-Peanut Butter Bars

  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 1/2 c. peanut butter
  • 1/2 c. granulated sugar
  • 1/2 c. brown sugar (packed)
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp. water
  • 1 1/4 c. flour
  • 3/4 tsp. soda
  • 1/2 tsp. baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 12 oz. semi-sweet chocolate morsels
  • 1/2 c. chopped salted peanuts


  1. Heat oven to 375 degrees.
  2. Grease 9×13 pan with butter.
  3. Mix shortening, peanut butter, sugars and egg.
  4. Stir in water, flour, soda, baking powder, salt and 6 oz. chocolate chips.
  5. Spread in pan.
  6. Bake about 20 minutes.
  7. Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle remaining chocolate chips evenly over baked layer.
  8. Place baking sheet or casserole cover over pan so contained heat will soften morsels.
  9. Spread softened chocolate evenly; sprinkle with peanuts.
  10. Cut into bars.
  11. Try and not eat every last one.
